Pierre Paulin's first designs are edited between 1953 and 1959 by the furniture companies Meubles TV and Thonet France. In 1959, his collaboration with Artifort begins; the owner at the time, Harry Wagemans, recognises the young Frenchman's talent very early on, and the collaboration will last until the mid-1970s. During this time, Pierre Paulin developed very creative models, such as his Tulip armchairs or the famous Mushroom armchair, but also more classic models.
Model 442, published by Artifort in 1962, is one of the more well-behaved designs drawn by Pierre Paulin during this period, along with other avant-garde creations (Ribbon Chair, The Tongue). In 2015, Ligne Roset re-edited this sofa under the name Andy.
With his CM 442 model, now Andy at Ligne Roset, Pierre Paulin reinterprets Florence Knoll's famous sofa (1954), but draws the outlines softer, reduces the number of buttons and thus dispenses with the strict square quilting, omits all the cross struts of the metal frame and keeps only the four feet, in short, he draws a new sofa for the private sphere, sensual and elegant.
A particularly fine detail is the chrome feet that continue up the front and back of the armrests. This feature, which is very elegant from both the front and the back, requires extremely precise manufacturing quality from the seamstresses and the upholsterers. Lap seams on the body and piping on the seat and back cushions underline the high-quality workmanship.
Originally intended as a leather model, ANDY is suitable for many fabric covers and is also removable in this case. High-quality foams in several degrees of hardness, single-seat under-suspension by Pullmaflex springs and a good seat inclination ensure exceptional comfort.
