Canaletto showcase

by Mauro Lipparini

The Canaletto showcase collection resembles a geometric challenge in the use of space due to the simultaneously solid as well as translucent corpus and the slender metal construction that borders the flat surfaces and seems to extend the corpus. A provocative blend of the essential features of industrial Bauhaus with modern elegance is created by the metal elements. The colours that lightly shine through the grooved glass are gradually softened and disappear, creating optical abstractions. The impression of subdivided and repeated geometric shapes is emphasised by the lacquered surfaces and the wooden panels of the back wall, poetically resembling a curtain that provides a discreet glimpse into the interior.

Although the collection of Canaletto showcase furniture comprises only a few pieces, it is absolutely unique. The upper corpus consists entirely of fluted glass on the front and sides, which has a linear pattern in which depressions and elevations alternate in a wave-like manner. Through the thin glass and the light effects, the shape of the objects inside can be seen or rather guessed. The glass of the doors is mounted flush on a frame of brushed, anodised and smoke-coloured aluminium by means of an invisible adhesive joint behind a bronze-coloured passepartout. The inner shelves are made of thin, lacquered metal and are firmly anchored to the back wall. The panels of the back wall are fixed between the shelves. They are either lacquered or with veneer in dark walnut finish. With these pieces of furniture, the overall impression is significantly enhanced by the lighting, as their shapes are distinguished and shown off to advantage by the doors and side panels.

There are two lighting systems: In the display case, there are four non-glare, horizontal light strips with a tinted light screen, which are set into the four rear panels and are visually appealing even when switched off. In the version with remote control and dimmer, the light intensity can be reduced if required. In the sideboard and sideboard with two doors, the indirect lighting at the back of the vertical side panels is created by a light strip attached to the rear edge of the panel; the lighting is on both sides, creating a beautiful halo in the interior. The colours of the shelves and the back panels also contribute to the bright atmosphere; the light intensity can also be regulated here via a dimmer.

The metal frame stands out strongly from the upper corpus and consists of steel tubes with a diameter of 12 mm, which are assembled like a construct of bamboo and thus convey solidity and lightness at the same time. The frame is lacquered in bronze, matching the colour of the aluminium frames of the doors, and has height-adjustable feet. The height varies between 250 and 500 mm according to the pieces of furniture.
