Cuts
by Philippe Nigro
The Shelf Module
When asked about Philippe Nigro's education, he often mentions his Meccano construction games from his childhood on the same level as his industrial design studies, his diploma at the Ecole Boulle in Paris or his work as Michele de Lucchi's closest collaborator since 1999; in fact, Philippe Nigro is passionately interested in all systems with overlapping arrangements and addition of a basic form that lead to new usable forms. Wasn't he born in Nice like the artist Arman?
The shelf module Cuts can be considered a masterpiece that fully meets this definition. The starting point of the project was a cuboid, which Philippe Nigro modified by making a 20° cut on one side and a 19° cut on the other. This incision is also immediately reminiscent of a half-opened book...
The parallelepiped, which can be used on both sides, modified in this way, has an irregular shape with bevelled angles; its maximum depth is 39.7 cm, but is identical at both ends in order to place several modules next to each other. The height of 36.5 cm is well suited for a bookshelf.
