Janus
by Sebastian Herkner
In 2022 Sebastian Herkner again collaborates with Ligne Roset and designs the Janus furniture, whose finishes he also selected himself.
The originality of this piece of furniture lies in the fact that the doors open and close at the same time, and they are completely lacquered. In addition, the narrow sides of the doors are veneered.
The word "January" comes from Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and endings.
Janus was proudly worshipped by the Romans as an "authentic" god (as opposed to the gods descended from the Greek pantheon). He was the god of transition - of endings, beginnings, entrances, exits, and passages. The name Janus (Ianus, in Latin, since the alphabet has no J) is etymologically connected with the term ianua, the gate, and Janus himself is called the Ianitor - the guardian of the gates of heaven.
