La Bibliothèque fil
by Pierre Paulin
Pierre Paulin is best known for his seating furniture rather than his cabinets, but he has nevertheless designed numerous bookshelves, such as the Elysée Palace bookshelf or the modular bookshelf exhibited at the Mobilier International stand at the Paris Housewares Fair in 1968. What all these designs have in common is that they are without back walls, light, free-standing and space-structuring.
The same will be true of the wooden bookcase with diagonally mounted compartments that he will design for his apartment in the Rue des Ursulines in Paris in the early eighties. And also with the steel-wire structure bookcase he drew in 1972 for the loft he lived in for a while in Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine. This shelf stood in front of his armchair La Déclive.
It is precisely this bookcase ''La Bibliothèque fil'' (Fil = thread or wire) that Ligne Roset will be launching in 2015 to make it accessible to a ''wider'' public. A minimalist bookcase that combines the lacquered finish of the steel wire structure with the multilayer wood of the thin shelves. It is based on an infinitely addable width grid of 70 cm. Each shelf has notches through which the vertical struts of the structure pass: an elegant yet stable construction. The shelves rest on small steel wire arches welded to the vertical braces. Height-adjustable feet secure the stand.
