Pumpkin

by Pierre Paulin

First edition of a unique piece from the private rooms of Georges Pumpidou at the Élysée Palace. Soft organic forms and taut seating comfort are characteristic of this seating furniture in foam architecture. Various upholstery materials and leathers are suitable for the model. Coloured wool covers underline the style. The armchair is also available in a swivel version.

Pumpkin is characteristic of the revolutionary style initiated by Pierre Paulin in the late 1950s. He liberated the forms of seating furniture by understanding them as independent bodies that do not necessarily have to stand on four feet: an approach that offers an incomparable freedom of forms and frees seating furniture from traditional construction and right-angled design.

By taking Jean Royère's work further (see his armchair Elephanteau of 1939 and, above all, his sofa Ours Polaire of 1947), Pierre Paulin designed inviting seating furniture: the forms are soft, organic, round, well-shaped, sensual, ready to take in the body, which is free to devote itself to them and their contours in a natural way. With Pierre Paulin, seating furniture adapts and not vice versa. Formally, Pumpkin is reminiscent of a giant pumpkin with its protective and pleasurable shell. Irresistible!
